On closer inspection, we think this may be just a Verizon issue, but not something we're able to resolve.

US customers on Verizon may be experiencing very slow access to our network, due to a problem between them and Level3 (as noted at http://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/37npp6/level3verizon_routing_issues/ ). Our only remedy is to turn off the Level3 connection; I am taking advice on this and will update in the next hour.
