We've resolved the database connection issue. But negative DNS caching may cause DNS lookups to fail until caches expire. The domain SOA sets the negative lookup cache expiry to about 40 minutes, but local caches might use a different value.
A workaround is to use the IP address of the host, or to use the domain name of a site located on the host. The cause seems to be the connection of an internal service to an old database, arising from fixes applied to resolve an earlier issue.

DNS records in the bytemark.co.uk domain, for recently provisioned dedicated hosts, may be unavailable. Sites on those machines are unaffected, but you may have problems using SSH, SFTP, and so on with those hosts.
